The Ballarat Planning Scheme's heritage schedule lists the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, the lake itself on Wendouree Parade, the former Bishop's Palace at 1444 Sturt Street and the former Mary's Mount Convent (Loreto Abbey) at 1600 Sturt Street, all with Lake Wendouree addresses, as on the Victorian Heritage Register. Its heritage overlay also covers places such as Aquinas College on Mair Street, Nazareth House on Mill Street, the Lakeview Hotel on Wendouree Parade, the Old Ballarat Cemetery and terrace houses on Victoria Avenue. Check the address in the planning scheme before you plan works.
Parts of Lake Wendouree are in design and development overlays for urban character areas, among them Urban Character Area 17 west of Pleasant Street, and parts are in the Environmental Audit Overlay.
Amendment C217ball proposes new Floodway Overlay and Land Subject to Inundation Overlay schedules and a Special Building Overlay in the Ballarat Planning Scheme, from the Ballarat 11 Waterways Flood Study (July 2025).
